The heavily weathered desert camouflage of the German Afrika Korps offers a fun opportunity to paint and weather the miniature, simulating a makeshift sand camouflage hastily applied over the Dunkelgrau. This camouflage, applied to vehicles reassigned from Europe, would peel and wear away easily, exposing the underlying Dunkelgrau and creating a strong contrast. The accumulation of dust and sand in North Africa would help to blend both tones to some extent, creating an interesting result with depth and layers.
In this video, Manu Gil demonstrates how to recreate this scheme on an Sd.Kfz. 223 armored vehicle. Manu walks through the entire process from start to finish, including applying the primer, recreating the initial Dunkelgrau and the weathered sand camouflage, and then building up successive layers of dust. To do this, Manu combines ATOM acrylics, chipping fluid, and ATOM washable paints. Manu also demonstrates how various weathering products are used to create realistic effects, including enamels such as the Afrika Korps wash and streaking grime for DAK, along with pigments and water-based solutions like AMMO’s exclusive Lock ‘N Load.

El camuflaje desértico, muy desgastado, del Afrika Korps alemán ofrece una divertida oportunidad para pintar y envejecer la miniatura, simulando un camuflaje de arena improvisado y aplicado a toda prisa sobre el Dunkelgrau. Este camuflaje, aplicado a vehículos reasignados desde Europa, se descascarillaría y desgastaría con facilidad, dejando al descubierto el Dunkelgrau subyacente y creando un fuerte contraste. La acumulación de polvo y arena en el norte de África contribuiría a difuminar ambos tonos en cierta medida, creando un resultado interesante con profundidad y capas.
