How to KOTOBUKIYA Models

 Pintando KOTOBUKIYA Models.

In today's post we review the book “How To KOTOBUKIYA Models” one of the most recent publications from AMMO by Mig Jiménez. This book is dedicated to the painting and weathering of the mecha and science fiction character models created by the Japanese company: Kotobukiya. Kotobukiya are one of the most prestigous and well known manufacturers of model kits in Japan.

On first impressions the book shows a publication with a carefully designed and attractive layout, full of high quality photographs. Importantly these are accompanied by detailed explanations of each process by Diego Quijano, José Luis López, Javier López de Anca and Mig Jiménez: an excellent team of model-makers. A quick flick through shows a wide range of techniques and processes.

After an initial prologue in which Mig Jiménez introduces us to the Kotobukiya universe, we find six main chapters.

The first chapter explains how to prepare the pieces before assembly. An important characteristic of these models is that the pieces fit together by pressure, making the use of glue unnecessary, and that they come moulded in coloured plastics so that they do not necessarily need to be painted.

Chapter 2 is dedicated to a Kotobukiya original IP: HEXA GEAR models, multipose articulated figures, mecha and vehicles that allow you to add or interchange parts thanks to their hexagonal joint system. Within this chapter we can follow the painting and weathering techniques carried out by Diego Quijano on the Motor Punisher attack vehicle and on the Governor Armor Type: Pawn A1 figure, both in 1/24 scale and  in paint schemes with a lot of wear and dirt.

Then Mig Jiménez explains in detail the work done on a Blockbuster vehicle in which he combines chipping, rust, dust, splashes and grease. To set the scene for the vehicle and its crew, he creates a diorama of a water canal in the city of Los Angeles, where he explains the creation and painting of the concrete, the placement of the graffiti and the addition of vegetation. This diorama is the one that illustrates the cover of the book.

In the third chapter, the protagonists are the FRAME ARMS: robotic mechanisms in which the core of the body (Frame) is fully articulated and shared across the different models, where they differ is in the outer armour (Arms). The first robot of this series that appears in the book is the SA-16 Stylet in 1/100 scale with a height of almost 17 cm. Javier López de Anca is the person behind behind this piece, and who with a detailed step by step explains us the processes of preparation, painting and weathering.

The next robot represented and also at 1/100 scale is the White Tiger "Baihu" on which Mig Jiménez combines various effects on a paint scheme with multiple chipping layers.

Chapter 4 presents some figures with a different aesthetic, the FRAME ARMS GIRLS, which combine the Frame Arms method of assembly seen previously with the female figures of anime aesthetics, resulting in an attractive combat android of 20 cm in height. Once again, Diego Quijano is in charge of the step-by-step painting of the Innocentia character. With a sexier image and stripped of the equipment, it serves as a base for a paint scheme combining different chromatic effects that enhance the stylised appearance of the figure.

MEGAMI DEVICE is the protagonist of the fifth chapter, a series of 14 cm female anime figures consisting of a main body with a high level of flexibility and a variety of weapons and equipment. The pieces are injected in different colours for unpainted assembly and are compatible with the pieces from the series described above. Javier López de Anca takes us through the complete step by step process of the Sol Hornet Low Visibility figure, which we can assemble without his characteristic armour or fully equipped as in this example. It also includes three pre finished faces to choose from. Javier works with different volumes of lights and shadows on the model using greys and blues that give it an attractive low visibility scheme. The article is completed with the placement of decals, outlines, subtle dirt and metallic paint.

José Luis López closes the book with a chapter dedicated to METAL GEAR SOLID, a very popular videogame saga launched by Konami in 1998. The focus of the article is one of the saga's vehicles, the Metal Gear ST-84 or Sahelanthropus, a bipedal battle tank with nuclear armament. The model is represented in 1/100 scale, consists of 600 pieces and has a height of 35 cm!!!! José Luis shows us an elaborate process in which he combines highlights and shadows with a disruptive camouflage scheme and the painting of a skull with stencils. The subsequent chipping, dirt and weathering effects make it a spectacular model.
